IEEE Hosts Student Professional Awareness Conference
On Saturday, April 6, the Swarthmore Chapter of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers hosted a Student Professional Awareness Conference in Hicks Mural Room.

The theme of the conference was 'The Value of a Liberal Arts Education' and was intended to expose students to some of the skills they'll require after college as a professional engineer and how they can practice those skills while at Swarthmore.

The conference featured three guest alumni speakers, Bill Belanger, '66, Douglas Myers, '83 and Peter Schiano, '84, as well as a panel discussion that included Paul Taylor, '70 and Jim Lindquist, '80.

Thank you very much to all of our speakers and all of the students who participated!

Peter Schiano addresses the group on "Building Knowledge of Career Growth as an Undergraduate."

Engineering Week Events a Success
Many thanks to all of the students and faculty who participated in last week's Engineering Week events, and congratulations to the winners of the Engineering Week competitions!

Representatives from many engineering student organizations and individual students brought their recent work to display in Parrish Parlours.

Susan Christensen, '03, describes her work to another student.

Michael Rutberg, '03, reading about the history of engineering at Swarthmore.

Kiyoyuki Miyasaka, '03, and Xiao Wu, '04, demonstrate the maze-navigating and award-winning Micromouse to two other students.

Winners of the Engineering Week Competition were also announced - congratulations to Todd Gillette, '03, Michael Rutberg, '03, Geoff Klein, '03, and Katie Saltanovitz, '04!

Todd Gillette, '04, demonstrates his winning design for a three-bit multiplier to Professor Siddiqui and other students.

Students (and Professor Cheever) watch as Geoff and Katie's straw tower is loaded.

The brilliant straw tower, under heavy load.

Michael Rutberg explains his excellent decimal-to-Roman-numeral-conversion program.

Lecture by David S.C. Pao, '65, on Monday, February 18 at 7:00 PM
David S.C. Pao, M.D. is one of the first engineering majors to add pre-med courses (and a 5th year) at Swarthmore in order to pursue a career in medicine. He will speak on "SWARTHMORE ENGINEERING AND MODERN MEDICINE--A PERFECT COMBINATION" and discuss the advantages of a Swarthmore engineering degree in the study of medicine and in his choice of ophthalmology for specialization. Medical instrumentation and surgery videos will be presented.

Everyone is encouraged to attend!

IEEE Student Section Holds Appliance Day
On Saturday, December 1, Swarthmore's student section of the Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) held an Appliance Day in Hicks Mural Room. Members of the college and surrounding communities were invited to bring their broken appliances to Hicks, where engineering students would take a shot at fixing them. Many students turned out to help, and many participants went home with functional appliances! IEEE sponsors this event annually.

Swarthmore ASCE chapter wins concrete beam competition
Once again, Swarthmore's student section of the American Society of Civil Engineers swept the Delaware Valley American Concrete Institute Student Beam Competition held at Widener University on November 10. The student members of the team were Michelle Lowry, Johanna Yoon, Jonah Eaton, Rory Kondrad, Stefan Gary, Katie Saltanovitz, Olga Rostapshova, Tan Mau Wu, Tim Lang, and Wynn Wu, and the team was advised by Prof. Faruq Siddiqui. Swarthmore competed against two other teams, one representing Temple University and the other representing Widener University.

The competition had two goals: to make the strongest possible beam and to make the most accurate predictions concerning the beam's deflection behavior under load. The dimensions of the beams were 2.5 x 5.5 x 40 inches with a total span of 36 inches and the teams were allowed to include twocomposite reinforcing rods in the length of the beam. Beams were loaded in "good old fashioned " three point bending with the 2.5 inch dimension asthe DEPTH of the beam (not the width). Of the two beams submitted by Swarthmore, one beam took the highest load (3675.9 lbs) and the other most
closely matched deflection predictions (7% error between theory and experiment with an ultimate strength of 3675.0 lbs!). The team's work earned $1000 for the Swarthmore College Chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).

According to Stefan Gary, '02, "We attribute our sucess to the excellent quality of our concrete mix and outstanding teamwork. While concrete used in most construction has a compressive strength of at most 6000 psi, our concrete was around 13000 psi! The lab trembled when the test cylinders broke! However, this concrete mix was very difficult to work with and required a lot of time to tamp (beat into submission so it fully fills the mold). This was an excellent "bonding" experience!"
